Edward Wakelin Buchan was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 17, 1937. He was the oldest of "Scotty" Robert Mitchell and Jean Wakelin Buchan.
In 1946 the family moved to Ostler Lake, Ontario then about a year later they moved to Nobel, Ontario where his Dad started a towing company. He grew up in Parry Sound, Ontario. He had 3 younger brothers. His brothers were Gordon (deceased) [Pat], Donald [Kay], Robert [Lynda]. His family and friends affectionately called him Ted.
Ted's mother taught him about the truth from an early age. Ted made the truth his own and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on August 4, 1956 when he was 19 years old. He was a zealous witness of Jehovah right from the start. He pioneered, before meeting his bride to be, Nettie Didur. She was a pioneer from Regina, Saskatchewan. She moved to Sarnia to pioneer with her friend Ruth. That's where she met Ted. They married on April 10, 1961. They special pioneered together in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for about 5 years, until they had an exciting change of assignment, learning they would be expecting a child. They settled in Parry Sound while Ted looked for work to support his family. He secured employment in June 1966 at Dow Chemical in Sarnia, Ontario. He continued to work at Dow until his retirement. They welcomed their daughter Sharon in July, 1966. Ted served faithfully as an elder in the local congregation in Sarnia until moving to Flin Flon, Manitoba in October 2013. In those 50 years he served as an Elder he also received many other assignments and privileges. He was a marriage officiant even conducting the ceremony of his nephew Jonathon Buchan. He also had the privilege to be a member of the Hospital Liaison Committee. When asked what assignment he was most proud of in his life he replied raising his daughter, Sharon, to love Jehovah.
He lost Nettie in death in June 2004. A few years later he met Bronwen Gwenyth Williams from Calgary, Alberta. They married on June 14, 2006. They lived in Sarnia, Ontario for 7 years before moving to Flin Flon, Manitoba in 2013. Ted continued to serve as an elder in Flin Flon until his death, however, we in Flin Flon affectionately knew him as Ed. Ed and Bonnie moved to be closer to her son Dan and his family particularly the new baby Annette. In the 12 years he served as an elder in Flin Flon, he was still a zealous example reporting time in ministry in his last month of life.
With his marriage to Bronwen he became a stepdad to her children Kari, Kim (deceased), Dan, Robyn and Jared. He also became Granddad to her grandkids Kylie Rossman, Braeden & Erik Loesch, Jessica, Jakob & Grace Hernandez, Marley & Caity (deceased) Watkins, Asher Jerome, Olivia, Victoria, Elizabeth and Annette Watkins.
His relationship with Jehovah was the most important thing in Ed's life. Even with failing health he maintained regular meeting attendance although in the past few years through Zoom provision. However, he made the extra effort to attend the memorial in person every year until 2023. In 2024, due to mobility challenges, he did attend the memorial with a local elder and his family although the memorial was brought to the care home where he was living via Zoom. Throughout his time in Flin Flon, he had regular phone witnessing groups in his home when he could no longer go from house to house. Even when faced with evacuation to Virden, Manitoba earlier this year, with the help of the local congregation and the Schaerer family, he was able to keep up his meeting attendance and even comment.
We look forward to welcoming Ed back to see what new assignments Jehovah has in store for him.
The nurses who cared for him fondly recall how he always displayed Christian qualities. He was positive, always trying to make a joke, and appreciative of all they did for him.
