It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eugenia “Jean” Antoniw on Friday, September 27, 2024 at the Northern Lights Manor in Flin Flon, Manitoba.  She was 89 years old.

Jean was born on July 23, 1935, the only child of Dmytro and Katherine (Herman) Basaraba in Ethelbert, Manitoba.

Jean went to teacher’s college to study business education in Winnipeg, Manitoba and then worked at Canadian National Railways to gain office experience.  She began her teaching career in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1953 as a high school business education teacher.  Three years later, she moved to Fort Frances, Ontario.  Then in 1960, she moved north to Flin Flon, Manitoba.  She taught at Hapnot Collegiate and Northlands College in Creighton, Saskatchewan.  After taking time off to raise her family, she shifted careers and in 1981 began work as a library technician at Ruth Betts School.  In 1983 she moved to Parkdale School library and worked there until her retirement in 1996.

In 1962, Jean met the love of her life, Harry Antoniw, a fellow teacher and principal.  He asked her to a Valentine’s party and the romantic gesture worked as they were married on July 20, 1963 in Ethelbert, Manitoba.  In 1965, they bought their first and only home, where their raised their children, Reece and Karna.  The family enjoyed travelling throughout Canada and the United States.  Jean and Harry enjoyed winter vacations in Arizona, Hawaii, Mexico and Jamaica.

Jean enjoyed music, flower gardening, knitting, bowling and of course, travelling.  She was a devout member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and later a member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church.  She volunteered as treasurer of the St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, at the local Food Bank, the Bingo Palace, the Flin Flon Personal Care Home and the Northern Lights Manor.

Jean touched many lives over the years through her teaching, volunteering and church work.  She was a kind, caring woman who deeply loved her family, and was very proud of  her four grandsons, Zachary, Aiden, Rylan and Evan, whom she adored.
