Memories of Liam

Liam Jeffrey Carl Wallaker-Cann was born, July 2, 2019 at the Winnipeg Women’s Hospital and he was born with gastroschisis, so he ended up spending 5 months in the children’s hospital in Winnipeg. Once we got the little man home he began to grow and got stronger everyday. Liam loved to play with paw patrol as he called them pups, spiderman, dinosaurs, his big trucks and excavator and watch Blippi on tv. He also loved to play with his sister and do whatever she did, they were best friends.

Kayla (mom) would always bug Liam and call him Dennis the menace and he would scrunch his face and say noooo its Liam, or id be like are we going to be like Dennis today and he would smile and go yup! When I first had Liam, Elaina was attached to his hip until he was able to crawl and talk and then run, he was the one who was attached to her hip, always right there doing what she was doing, he loved her so much, they were always calling each other their best friends. I know he will be with her every step of the way and lookout for her when I can’t be there to do it myself. Whenever me and Liam dropped Elaina off at school, I would ask him what shall we do now and he would go let’s go home and I’mma make your coffee and watch pups (paw patrol) or Blippi, he loved that I got a Keurig because it was so easy to make mama her coffee and would laugh when the coffee would start saying your coffee is farting lol. you are the most sweetest boy, I will never forget your raspy little voice saying I love you, or cuddle me mama, or whenever I had to get ready for work and would do my makeup he always joined in and tell me your so pretty mama, I pretty too? Yes, my boy, always. Your laugh was the most contagious thing ever and your squeeze hugs will never be forgotten they always made anyone who got one feel so much better. Two years of loving you was not long enough but I will keep every memory alive and cherish every moment we had together. In just this short time you taught me so much, to love and be loved unconditionally, to be strong and fearless just like you were and to witness the most precious little boy and his big sister have the most beautiful friendship.

Kelsey (dad) called Liam his little Monster. When Liam was little, we would put him in the little basket in the front of the quad and go for rides, he loved it. When we would go up to the family cabin with grandpa Gord, the kids loved playing outside and Liam loved to play with my old tractor and trucks. He got to experience a piece of my childhood. When I would fly in and out to work, Kayla would bring the kids to watch the plane and greet me. The last time I left to go to work Liam wanted to come with me, I convinced him to stay and protect his mom and sister. There are so many more stories and memories to share, but until we meet again little monster.

Elaina’s favorite memories – she loved to play outside at the park with her brother on the jungle gym, she also loved to play hide n go seek and they drove their mom crazy riding their bikes around and around the house, laughing all the time. When Liam was little, Elaina loved to help feed him and even sang songs to help him sleep. Some of their favorite games were knock, knock jokes, rock, paper, scissors and connect 4 and many more games.

Liam was referred to as nana’s little peanut. I loved every time I went to look after them, he would come running to the door and say nana and give me the biggest hug, he had to pretend to make me tea and honey and cook something in their pretend kitchen. When it was time to bake some real cookies or cupcakes, he was right there with Elaina to help and had to taste test everything. He also enjoyed spending time over at nanas and papa’s playing and having sleepovers if you asked him who he wanted to sleep with it was always nana and going camping with us in the summer at bakers narrows.

Papa loved to tease the kids and Liam’s nickname was Henry Watercan, he always got a good laugh from papa. Last summer Liam caught his first fish with papa out at Thompson Lake, even if it was a jackfish. Poor papa also got blamed for everything even if he wasn’t there, you would ask Liam were did you learn that and he would say papa. One of the best ones I remember is when Elaina was trying to jump with 2 feet and then Liam wanted to copy her and he could only lift 1 leg to jump and the other one stayed on the ground, he was kinda hopping it was so cute and he had the biggest smile on his face that he was so proud that he thought he could do it. He had a little smirk that he would always give papa.

Liam loved to play with uncle Blake as he soon learned that he would give them piggy back rides and pretend to be a dinosaur they never wanted it to end. In the summer they would jump on the trampoline together and they also cuddled and relaxed on the floor watching tv.

Grandma Jackie – Last summer you guys came to Snow Lake for a visit and we were going to have supper together, barbequed ribs, well the place where Liam was sitting was a total mess there were stains from the barbeque sauce and the cheesy potatoes all around his plate lol, when I took the plate off the table there was almost a perfect circle in the shape of a plate that was clean and the outside of the circle was bbq mess. Kayla was like omg I am sorry! My answer was it’s only a table cloth.

This past Christmas the kids discovered the couch turns into a bed, Liam would roll the trundle bed out but couldn’t quite pull it up into place, then he would lay down on it for about 2 seconds and pretend to sleep, then he would get up and put the trundle bed away only to try and pull it out again seconds later. He played with the couch more than he did with the toys that were here.

Grandpa Gord – Liam was always happy when he came to visit, he loves to ride in the side by side and even had a turn driving it with the biggest smile on his face. In the summer he also loved to ride and drive in the boat, but most of all he loved his snacks, he was just a very happy little guy.

Grandma Ann – What I hold dear to my heart is the feel of Liam in my arms when he would run and make a big jump towards me for a big hug. He brought so much joy inn his little life to everyone who knew him. I will always hold you in my heart Liam. Fly with the angels my love.

Aunty Kim – one of the best memories was when Kayla, Kelsey took Liam to Winnipeg for an appt and I met them there and we took Liam to the zoo for the first time, we loved the dinosaur exhibit and all the animals.

Uncle Morgan (can’t be with us today, but wanted to share) – Liam was so tiny the first time I met him. He was still recovering at the Health Science Center in Winnipeg from his first surgery. He looked so little sleeping in his nest of blankets with a number of tubes and wires attached to his little body. As scary and unsettling as it was for us to watch him come into the world this way, Liam showed no signs of discomfort. He wasn’t asleep for long, and I’ll never forget when he opened his big inquisitive eyes, surveying the room with a big smile on his face. He yawned, did a big stretch with his arms up over his head, and smiled at me. I became Liam’s uncle that day. I was overwhelmed with happiness. I will always remember Liam with his big smile and arms outstretched seemingly in victory. May his memory be a blessing.

Aunty Cindy, Uncle Scott, Austyn and Evin – On Jan 24th we lost the youngest member of our tribe. For days the only question I asked myself was why? After spending many days with family and friends I started to look to the positive.

The memories of the sweetest little boy, it wasn’t very often that you didn’t see Liam happy or that he wasn’t telling you a very animated story, even if you didn’t understand a word, you couldn’t help but laugh. He was a shy but curious little guy and once he took to you, he loved you with his whole heart. He looked up to his big sister Elaina and wanted to do everything she did. As I sit and think about Liam, memories surface. Memories of camping, swimming and trips to the park. Every memory I have, I think of his bright blue eyes, his beautiful blond curls and his smile that took up his whole face. He will always be remembered fondly, deeply loved.

Aunty Ann - When Kelsey, Kayla and Liam came to visit last summer (Elaina didn’t make the trip) there was an instant friendship made between Liam and my dog Baxter, they were inseparable. They played so much, chased each other around the house and played ball outside. When they were sitting down Baxter would go lay beside Liam and he would pet him and give his belly a rub. You couldn’t tear them apart. When it was time for them to leave, Liam wanted to take Baxter with them. He was upset when he could do that, Baxter was upset as well watching them through the living room window. When he could no longer see them, he walked away slowly with his head down to go down to the bedroom.

Aunty Rhoda & Uncle Roger - When Liam came to visit, he wanted to ride with uncle Roger in his wheelchair. Kelsey lifted him up and placed him on his lap. Liam showed no fear at all as he rode around the house. He also loved to play in the water in the pool in the back yard, as we all know Liam loved the water.

Joyce Fulmore – We had the privilege of knowing Liam for most of his young life as they lived 4 doors down from us. We didn’t see them often but they would stop in once in a while for a freezie and a visit. Both Elaina and Liam were a little shy at first but Elaina warmed up to me a lot quicker than Liam. He would always stick pretty close to mom and dad. The last time I saw Liam, him and Kelsey stopped over for breakfast and once I fed him and brought out the toys, he was no longer shy. He was being a typical little, busy, funny, talkative kid.  When it was time for them to leave Kelsey went to help him put on his shoes on and Liam said “NO”. He wanted me to help him get ready. I will cherish that memory and the pictures I took of him that day. I am so heartbroken for Kelsey, Kayla and big sister Elaina and everyone that knew him.

Travis and Johneah – Travis and I were fortunate enough to have a few memories with Liam. Kelsey brought Liam out to our campsite one afternoon and I dipped Liam’s toes in the water. We played in the sand and I admired Liam’s chunky little arms. Kayla and Kelsey brought Liam and Elaina over to my moms one afternoon and all I can remember is how great of a big sister Elaina was. She was always looking out for her little brother, making sure he was safe and making him laugh.

The kids came by at Halloween trick- or- treating and I tried talking to Liam and he was so distracted by my dog, who was super interested in getting to know him too. Liam held out his hand and my dog wasn’t too sure what to do, I don’t think he ever saw spiderman before.

We really wish you could have stayed longer buddy. This has hurt each and every one of us and you positively impacted all our lives. Your infectious giggle and chubby cheeks will be missed forever little buddy.

Taylor, Kyle Kinsley and Jayden – I remember the first-time meeting Kayla and Elaina and we instantly clicked. She was pregnant at the time with Liam and I was only a few short months behind her with Jayden. Little did I know they would become best friends. The girls played & the boys wreaked havoc. I mean they were boys so there were some hands thrown too. You couldn’t get a better pair though. From side-by-side rides, dancing, playing trucks or at the park we always had so much fun together. I can hear Liam’s little voice saying bye-bye Jayden and Kins we were all more like a family. We had sleepovers, movie nights, play dates and so much fun in the short time we had together. Liam was the sweetest kid and never failed to make me laugh. My favorite memory can’t be just one I loved them all. I loved that he got comfortable enough with us that we could take him out in the side by side or watch him while Kayla had to run somewhere. We loved him more than words can explain. We have so many memories to hold close.

Jenna – The thing that comes to the top of my head was when he met Olivia and he wasn’t the baby anymore so he threw a toy at her lol but that’s not a good one cause he’s a sweet boy just had a moment.

We weren’t just called Ashley and Mark, we were called aunty and uncle in their household and we were so honoured to have that title for them, we would do anything for Liam and Elaina. Liam liked when uncle mark would come over the kids would make him sit there and build the biggest block tower until all the blocks in the house were gone. He is also a kid at heart so he always knew the best gifts to get the kids on birthdays and holidays, this past Christmas mark picked out a fast and the furious car and Liam was over the roof excited, it was such a cool car and a big blow-up reindeer to go sliding on that Liam used the first time he ever went sliding and had the best time, the perfect gift. As for aunty she was the hairdresser, she cut Liam’s hair every time he needed one even though he never wanted one lol he would only ask for a little bit cut off and could never ever sit still, he would move around so much, looking around, trying to see what was on tv, but when it was done, he would be so happy and love how his hair looked.

Sarah and Chloe - I wanted to ask Chloe what’s a good memory for her and she said mom all of the memories hanging with Liam. The best was when he’s my boyfriend, I didn’t have a crush on him but he liked me and I was his girlfriend.
