Michael Chrupalo Obituary

Dad was born in Winnipegosis to Rose and Andrew Chrupalo on April 15, 1932.  He passed away on March 16, 2024 in Dauphin.  He was raised on the family farm and achieved his Grade 7 education.  He worked at commercial fishing, lumber camps and road construction in the Lake Winnipegosis and rural Dauphin area.

It was while working around Winnipegosis that he met Mom.  They were married on October 12, 1955.  Together they worked at the lumber camps, with Dad working with the lumber, and Mom cooking for the camp.  In 1957, they relocated to Flin Flon.  There, Dad would have a career at the smelter at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co.  He started as a general laborer in September of 1957, and retired in March of 1992 as a general foreman.

Dad and Mom welcomed the arrival of their son Michael in 1958, and daughter Marlene in 1960.  Growing up in Flin Flon, they instilled in us the love of fishing, camping, berry picking and just being outdoors.  Dad truly loved fishing and delighted in taking family or friends out on the lake.  Summer fishing, or ice fishing, he loved it all and earned a few master angler awards for pickerel.  After his retirement, he and his fishing buddy Jan fished regularly, and he had many memorable trips to Mikanagan Lake with his nephew Willie.

Camping at Iskwasum Landing was a regular summer event once the grandchildren arrived.  Many fond memories were made there with his children and their families.

Church was an important part of Dad’s life.  While at St. Ann’s in Flin Flon, he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a 4th degree Knight for several years before leaving the community.

Traveling was also an enjoyed past time.  Hawaii, Alaska, Yukon, and both east and west coasts were all destinations that they visited.  Later on in his retirement, they wintered in Osoyoos for a couple of months each winter.

Next to fishing, Dad really enjoyed sports, and was a lifelong fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 2012, Dad and Mom moved to Clint and Marlene’s farm so he could be assisted in Mom’s care with her having dementia.  Dad enjoyed the farm and would eagerly participate in harvest or helping with cattle chores.  He also enjoyed helping Marlene with yard work.  While living in Dauphin he took up ice fishing on Lake Dauphin with Clint’s brother Cam and there they would meet up with Willie.

Family was very important to him and he loved when his great granddaughters would visit.  Just watching them play in the yard brought him joy.  He welcomed them when they would go to his house, and always had a treat waiting for them.

More recently as his mobility deteriorated, he enjoyed going for drives with Clint to the gravel pit, or just around the neighborhood.

Tragically, he was predeceased by his son Michael in 2014.  He was also predeceased by his parents, brothers John, Stanley (Betty), Frank (Stella), Lawrence (Vera), sisters Stella, Anne (Albert), Mary (Bill), and Carolina (Stephan).

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anne, his daughter Marlene (Clint) grandchildren-Gerri Chute, Michael (Jayme) Chute, Daniel Chrupalo (Madison), great grandchildren Jaedyn and Haylie Chute and Barry Chrupalo.

Also surviving are his daughter in law Heather Chrupalo (Lyle), sister Sr. Germaine Chrupalo OSB, sisters in law Jean Matwee, JoAnne Baker, and Francis Mansell, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
